There have been rumors going around the internet for a while now about a new Facebook phone hitting the market. Facebook has denied that this rumor has any basis in fact; however they have recently unveiled Facebook Home. Facebook Home is essentially a skin or launcher that you can download for many of the newer Android devices. You will navigate through the skin similar to the way you would the typical Android skin that you are used to, including answering calls, launching apps, and everything else. What Facebook Home will do is eliminate your need to open a Facebook App in order to view your news feed or chat with friends. The whole skin is built around making Facebook more accessible and it boasts an elegant layout as well as many features that are supposed to improve you experience with Facebook and your phone overall.
Facebook Home will be available in the Google Play Store for several current and future phones including the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, HTC One X, and One X+. On top of this the HTC First will be the first phone to be released with Facebook Home preloaded on it.
The question that arises then is this, who will actually want this? I personally spend too much time on Facebook as it is. The last thing I need is to turn my phone into more of a distraction. I like having access to Facebook on my phone but I don’t want it to be dedicated to it twenty-four-seven. I do not see Facebook Home becoming mainstream or even popular; it just doesn’t seem necessary or even wanted for that matter. For instance many people these days use their smart-phones for work and Facebook Home will certainly not be a viable choice for them. Maybe I will be proven wrong but I will not be surprised if particular endeavor by Facebook flops.
