Apple confirmed that they will not be including a preloaded YouTube app in the upcoming iPad and iPhone with the iOS 6 operating system. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said, “Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended.” YouTube videos will be able to be watched in Safari, and the YouTube app will be available through the app store.
The YouTube app has been preloaded on Apple devices since 2007, but since that time Google (YouTube’s owner) and Apple have become less friendly. Since Google limited the usage of their Maps API, Apple dropped Google Maps from iOS 6 software. Currently Google is still the default search engine on Safari on the iPhone, but some are wondering if Apple will change this too. Apple has already switched Google for Baidu as the default search engine in China, and they may make a similar change in the west. Since the iPhone accounts for two thirds of mobile web browsing, that could potentially hurt Google’s revenue.
