As the only female employee at an I.T. company, I often wonder why more women aren’t interested in technology. Apparently this is a topic the United Nations has also decided to explore. The U.N., through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agency, has started a campaign called Tech Needs Girls , which seeks to raise global awareness of the role information and communication technologies can play in empowering women.
Their website features stories of women “geeks”, such as Marissa Mayer, a senior executive at Google and Ruchi Sanghvi, who was Facebook’s first female engineer. Seemingly, the website will also allow girls to share their own stories in the future. The website offers a list of resources and states, “Governments, the private sector and media are encouraged to join the campaign and make a difference – not only to the lives of girls and women, but to entire communities around the world.”
