GameStop Acquires Kongregate

I helped a friend of mine the other day exchange his PS3 out for a new one under the PRP he bought at a local GameStop. I was waiting for him and perusing around the store when I heard on the GameStop video feed Hacker vs. Hacker ; watching the mini review really got my interest. I soon learned about kongregate.com. My friend and I also learned that GameStop has partnered the website with its Powerup rewards program. By spending time on the website and earning achievements, you can actually earn points towards GameStop’s rewards program. They currently have a promotion going for a specific game called Tyrant. You can get your code at a local store. If you make it to certain levels on the game you get rewards points. There’s also a chance to win $10,000 if you make it to level 5 and a second chance if you make it to level 10.
I found this acquisition and use of their rewards program very interesting. It is a smart business move for GameStop as I do not know of any other game store that has this. The closest to GameStop in midnight releases, game rewards, gaming magazines, and the like all being under one roof is Best Buy. Best Buy has really improved their influence on the gaming world. Some of their newer stores even have a “gaming store” within the store. However, I am not aware of Best Buy having anything like GameStop’s creative partnership with their rewards program and a online game website. This partnership allows actual game play time to not only reap awards that you can brag about online or via Facebook, but into rewards that can help you get product at your local store as well.
